“Anita Brokmeier is an outstanding asset in the space. She shows great maturity in her approach to the work, and is consistent, curious and playful.”

Exploring the complex intersection of the personal and the political.
My work often grapples with themes like the politics of power & oppression (Ratking), environmental justice (Farewell and Thanks for All the Sheep), animal rights (Mondschweine), feminism & body politics (Parable of One), and mental health & intergenerational trauma (Oil & Water, The Light Princess). Whilst I’m not afraid of going to dark places, my work is always looking for fierce entertainment and questions of hope.
I draw inspiration from a variety of European traditions, including Grotowski’s laboratory theatre, the ritualistic nature of Ancient Greek theatre, German expressionism & post-structuralism and the raw intensity of Sarah Kane’s in-yer-face theatre. Ultimately, though, I’m creating something new - simply acknowledging the richness of what’s come before.
Sometimes it begins with an idea, and then you ‘do something’. Sometimes it begins with the ‘doing something’, and the idea follows.
